Why Sequim Lavender

The science and magic behind North America's Lavender Capital

The Olympic Rain Shadow

A microclimate that rivals Provence, France

Nature's Perfect Storm Shelter

The Olympic Mountains rise over 7,000 feet, creating a massive wall that intercepts Pacific storms. While Seattle gets 37 inches of rain and the western Olympics get over 140 inches, Sequim sits in the dry shadow receiving only 16 inches annually — comparable to Los Angeles.

This isn't just dry — it's dry with abundant sunshine. Sequim averages over 300 sunny days per year, providing the long, warm summers that lavender needs to develop the highest concentrations of aromatic oils.

The Terroir of Lavender

Like fine wine, lavender quality is shaped by place

⛰️

Glacial Soil

Sequim's soil was deposited by ancient glaciers, creating perfectly drained sandy loam. Lavender hates wet feet — and this soil never holds excess water.

🧪

Alkaline Balance

The naturally alkaline pH (7.0-8.0) of our soil matches lavender's native Mediterranean conditions. No amendments needed — nature got it right.

💎

Mineral Rich

Glacial deposits brought a diverse mineral profile that feeds lavender plants complex nutrients, contributing to the depth and complexity of our essential oils.

🇫🇷 The French Connection

Sequim's dry, sunny climate and well-drained alkaline soil are often compared to the lavender-growing regions of Provence in the south of France.

The Science of Fragrance

What gives lavender its distinctive scent

Lavender's calming fragrance comes from naturally occurring compounds such as linalool and linalyl acetate. These terpenes give lavender its distinctive aroma and have long been valued in aromatherapy and perfumery.

😴

Soothing Scent

Lavender's soft, sweet fragrance is a longtime favorite for sachets and pillow mists, and it is widely associated with rest and relaxation.

🧘

Calming Aroma

The familiar aroma of lavender is a staple of aromatherapy, often used in essential oils, candles, and bath products to create a calming atmosphere.

🌿

Culinary & Craft

Beyond fragrance, lavender flowers are used in cooking, baking, and teas, and in dried bundles, wreaths, and other handmade crafts.

💆

Everyday Relaxation

From bath salts to body lotions, lavender's scent has long been a popular choice for products meant to help you unwind and relax.

Lavender Varieties of Sequim

From culinary favorites to aromatic powerhouses

Sequim's farms grow two main families of lavender: English (Lavandula angustifolia) for culinary use and fine fragrance, and Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) for essential oil production and dramatic field displays. Each variety brings its own character, color, and fragrance to the valley.
